Mental Wellness
Walking With The Buffalo Within - Program (6days/14hrs)
certification upon completion
The services that will be provided will assist and empower individuals to recognize and identify early signs of suicide ideation, depression, addictions, and risk factors. Also, our services will encourage healthy relationship building and open dialogue on sensitive topics that are considered taboo among Indigenous people today. Participants will then be skilled to become effective peer support helpers by creating a safe and secure environment for others who need advice and support for mental health. Culture has also been linked to healing for Indigenous people by providing a sense of belonging, identity, humility, respect for self, and love.
Program details:
"Walking with the buffalo within" is a program filled with cultural stories, hands on learning, narrative art therapy and active mindfulness approaches.
Mentoring
Mentoring Programs:
A Peer-to-Peer mentoring program has been found to be one of the most successful programs in a school setting; however, there is a lack of remote peer to peer community support services that deal with mental health concerns for Indigenous people. The solution to the lack of support services could be in the form of cultural land-based teachings that will provide evidence-based prevention and intervention in addressing suicide, addictions, violence and mental health
concerns. When challenges in life occur, people naturally reach out for support from those closest to them – coworkers, friends, and family. Their initial response can go a long way in terms of normalizing the challenge, planning the next steps, and exploring additional resources.
Program details:
2 day Youth & Adult cultural camps filled with land-based learning and traditional star stories to aid in self awareness, healing and community. (available: May-Early October)
Strengthening Cultures At Risk of Perishing
Strengthening cultures at risk of perishing through cultural knowledge and wisdom. Cultural knowledge within any indigenous community is vital to the root of identity and belonging. Knowledge keeper and elders play a vital role in strengthening cultures that are at risk of perishing. This can be accomplished by bringing together individuals and knowledge keepers to form a community of learners thus creating roots of life through personal and historical stories.
